Donate your time for a better Lyme!
Learn how you can make a difference in Lyme. Lyme-affliated nonprofits, associations, boards and commissions will be represented where you can volunteer and be of service to our town.
Coffee and cider donuts will be served.
All are welcome
From the Lyme Ambulance Association to Parks & Rec, the Affordable Housing Commission to the Lyme Land Trust, volunteers play a critical role in keeping the town of Lyme running smoothly. Lyme employs only a handful of full-time employees, so to operate efficiently, more than 140 positions on boards and commissions are staffed with volunteers. These are talented citizens who step forward to serve our town with their expertise and experience, dedication and passion. On Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 2-4pm, the Lyme Public Library, the Democratic Town Committee, and the Republican Town Committee will host a Volunteer Fair with free coffee and cider donuts, and the chance for attendees to meet representatives from Lyme-affiliated organizations, boards and commissions. At this fun-filled event, attendees will hear inspiring stories about how volunteers play a critical role in keeping Lyme safe, operational, and fiscally responsible, as well as to discover how they might put their skills and talents to use, whether it’s providing an hour or two to clear a hiking trail, assisting an organization with administrative work, or serving on a board or commission. There are so many enjoyable and meaningful ways to be of service in the town of Lyme, and the Volunteer Fair is a great way to connect with neighbors and find out what volunteer opportunities are available.

Join us for an informative and entertaining evening when former butler and author of A Butler's Life: Scenes from the Other Side of the Silver Salver, Christopher Allen comes to the Lyme Library
Part memoir, part how-to, A Butler's Life --follows the real-life duties of Mr. Allen when he was in service and offers a contemporary peek into this fascinating, yet demanding profession.
Those for whom the mental picture of a British butler is the impeccable Jeeves or Remains of the Day’s prim Mr. Stevens will find Christopher Allen a surprise and a delight. The engaging Englishman, while no less a paragon of service than his literary peers, is charmingly human in his ongoing endeavor to master a profession whose most perfect representative is invisible.
And, for those whose homes might not be staffed with live-in servants but who would enjoy benefiting from their expertise, nearly two dozen sidebars reveal tips of the trade--everything from hints for seamless entertaining to advice on household management.
Far from a relic of a past era, Christopher Allen demonstrates that being a butler -- in villas on the Cote d’Azur and in California, on luxury yachts in England and estates in the Hamptons -- is still a very viable, rewarding way to make a living in the twenty-first century.
