The History of the Green Book

New York City postal worker Victor Hugo Green, knowing that increased travel among African Americans could be unsafe, created The Green Book in 1936, the first country-wide listing of safe places for Black travelers to buy gas, get meals and find lodging. It was published yearly until the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964.
