Writers for Democratic Action (WDA) and Courageous Conversations Towards Racial Justice announce the performance of IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE–AGAIN!,  a new play resisting the rise of authoritarianism.
This is the second phase of WDA’s nationwide literary celebration of resistance to the MAGA threat. On July 19, 2024 –the day after the Republican Party nominated its candidate for President of the United States - more than 90 readings of this simple five-player script were simultaneously mounted in theaters, bookstores, bars, churches, parks, and living rooms all across the nation. Thousands of people accepted WDA’s invitation to stand strong for democracy in America. And now they are doing it again.
IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE-AGAIN! is inspired by the Sinclair Lewis play It Can’t Happen Here, which was presented across the nation on October 27, 1936 as a New Deal rallying cry against the rise of fascism in the US. Now, only days before the 2024 presidential election, and honoring the Lewis anniversary, that cry must be heard again.
